The Pedantic Arts Residency re-embraces the impact that education, study and structured contemplation can have on artistic output by interconnecting creators, organizers and critics: each four-week cohort brings together three creatives, one practicing visual art, one curating, and one writing, for exchange and cross-disciplinary dialogue. Each resident receives a free bedroom at the Pedantic Apartment on Penn Avenue in one of Pittsburgh's largest art hubs, a USD 2,000 honorarium to use at their discretion (half on arrival, half on completion), help establishing connections relevant to their research goals, and a Pittsburgh-based guide working in a similar field. Weekly programming includes private dinners, studio visits and museum tours, some open to the public and some reserved for the cohort. No final deliverable is required; Pedantic prioritizes immersion over production, though living at the apartment for the full program is required. ELIGIBILITY: creatives aged 18+ living outside the greater Pittsburgh metropolitan area (Pittsburgh-based creatives are not eligible). APPLICATION: submission requirements vary by role (images for visual artists, writing samples for writers, documentation for organizers), as PDF or ZIP files; submit by 15 October for the upcoming cohort. Cohorts run each January and June.
The Pedantic Research Grant is a derivative program of the Pedantic Arts Residency offering another way to be immersed in Pittsburgh's communities: an independent opportunity for visual artists, curators and writers to conduct self-motivated, Pittsburgh-related research. The stay runs one or two weeks, scheduled flexibly between the grantee and the Pedantic Crew, and is based on Penn Avenue in one of Pittsburgh's largest art hubs. The grantee receives a free bedroom at the Pedantic Apartment, an honorarium of USD 500 or USD 1,000 depending on length, and help establishing connections to individuals and organizations key to the research goals. ELIGIBILITY: past Pedantic Arts Residency participants continuing to develop their experiences, or new candidates with a uniquely specific reason to be in Pittsburgh. APPLICATION: submit via the Open Call by 15 October for the upcoming cycle.
The Cloud House Residency, run by Dreamsong in the Northeast Arts District of Minneapolis, provides accommodation and support for individuals working in contemporary art who intend to develop, exhibit, or curate new work in Minnesota. Residents stay in a 700 square foot one-bedroom cottage on Dreamsong's compound and receive a prorated stipend of USD 300 per week, with possible studio space and travel or materials budgets considered on request. The program is open to emerging and mid-career visual artists, curators, and writers with a focus on contemporary art, and it hosts one individual or a two-person collaborative team at a time. The organizers arrange introductions to local artists, curators, writers, institutions, and galleries across the Twin Cities. Standard stays are 4 to 6 weeks, with occasional one-week options. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the program is currently booking residents for October through December 2026 and throughout 2027.
apexart's Open Calls turn a curatorial idea into a funded apexart exhibition, selected by a crowdsourced international jury of more than 600 people in 70 countries. WHO CAN SUBMIT: anyone, from anywhere, with no fees at any level: trained and student curators, artists, writers and creative people regardless of experience, background or location. HOW: a 500-word proposal for a focused, idea-driven, original group exhibition, submitted through the online form during the proposal window. TWO ANNUAL WINDOWS: every October for exhibitions in apexart's NYC space, and every February (to early March) for exhibitions taking place anywhere in the world except NYC; for the international call you must propose a location you have actually visited, with the specific venue settled after selection. SELECTION: jurors vote anonymously online (each proposal gets an equal number of views, submitter names hidden); proposals are judged on the strength of the idea and how well it is communicated, not on connections or CV. WHAT WINNERS GET: a USD 10,000 budget (USD 8,000 for expenses, up to USD 2,000 curator honorarium, plus up to USD 1,000 venue-rental match outside NYC), with apexart covering insurance, publicity, the printed brochure, the opening reception and most logistics including loan agreements and shipping, and staff working closely with the guest curator.
