DigiPulse is a three-year longitudinal, international research project in LSE's Digital Futures for Children centre investigating the real-time relationships between children's smartphone use and their wellbeing, with data collected in the UK, Brazil and Kenya. The project combines passive smartphone tracking, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) and longitudinal surveys with around 750 children and young people aged 10-17. THE ROLE: the Research Officer plays a central part in project management, development, data collection and analysis, with particular responsibility for developing and refining EMA instruments, contributing to the research literature and hypotheses, supporting participatory and consultative work with children, and conducting statistical analysis and producing findings, working closely with partners in the UK, Brazil and Kenya. REQUIREMENTS: a completed PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. media and communications, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, education, or computational/data social science); experience developing surveys or questionnaire instruments; experience designing or conducting longitudinal research studies; and experience with EMA, experience-sampling or other intensive longitudinal data collection methods. ARIA is seeking proposals for opportunity seeds, funding of up to GBP 500,000 for early-stage research that explores new pathways for climate adaptation and resilience. Decarbonisation is the only sustainable route out of the climate crisis, but environmental changes are outpacing current mitigation efforts, and if an abrupt alteration in a climate system were to unfold we would have no tools to mitigate the effects; scientific, engineering and social science research could provide practical and responsible intervention and adaptation options. WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR: ideas ranging from early-stage, curiosity-driven research through to advanced translational science. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to: carbon dioxide removal (novel concepts to accelerate the drawdown of atmospheric carbon); extreme weather forecasting (breakthroughs in predicting extreme weather events to better prepare vulnerable systems); and new ideas related to solar geoengineering, strictly excluding proposals specifically designed to investigate altering the Earth's surface temperature by affecting planetary albedo, incoming solar radiation, or the atmosphere's emissivity (the core focus of the main Exploring Climate Cooling, ECC, programme). OUT OF SCOPE: ideas that squarely fit within the ECC programme; emissions reduction projects and improvements to the energy efficiency of buildings or vehicles; and commercial products or research likely to be funded by traditional venture capital or grants. CONSTRAINTS: any proposal for outdoor experiments must demonstrate conformity to ARIA's governance framework for outdoor experiments, and all successful applicants must sign ARIA's Intellectual Property Pledge to ensure findings are accessible for the public good. Twelve-month postdoctoral fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh, in partnership with the British Council, marking the Council's 90th anniversary. Fellows spend ten months residential at IASH (January to October 2027) followed by up to two months of knowledge-exchange and dissemination work in their home country in collaboration with the British Council. Funding programme run by Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study based at ISER, University of Essex, enabling researchers to take time out to work on projects using the Study's data. The May 2026 round welcomes applications under three themes: (1) public engagement, defined as two-way activities such as public events/festivals of science with active dialogue, patient and public involvement, public dialogue, and co-production of research with local communities; (2) environment, climate change and energy use, drawing on newly released attitudinal, behavioural, administrative and smart data; (3) exploiting the unique value of the Study (large nationally representative longitudinal household survey, ethnic minority and immigrant boost samples, biomarker and genetic data). Eligibility: any researcher based at a UK HEI, research/policy institute, or third-sector organisation (University of Essex excluded; previously successful applicants excluded). Early career researchers (under 3 years post-PhD) must identify a mentor at their host institution; third-sector applicants must identify an academic collaborator. Application requires a signed Head of Department statement, project plan (max 2 pages), 2-page CV, cost estimate from the host HEI's finance office, and dissemination plan.
