Talks & Workshops

I give talks and run hands-on workshops on AI, surveillance, deepfakes, and creative technology for festivals, universities, museums, and conferences. I also take on bespoke commissions.

All talks and workshops can be adapted to your audience, from beginner to advanced. Every talk includes an optional hands-on workshop component. Previous hosts include IMPAKT Festival, University of Arts London, HKU, ArtEZ, Piet Zwart Institute, and iii: Instrument Inventors Initiative.

For Artists

Introduction to AI for Artists

  • Practical introduction to AI for creative practitioners, no coding experience required
  • Working with text-to-image generation, GANs, and large language models as creative tools
  • The politics of training data: where it comes from, who profits, and who is harmed
  • Questions of authorship, ownership, and copyright in AI-generated work
  • Environmental cost of large models
  • How artists can critically engage with AI rather than passively consume it
WORKSHOP CREATIVE TECH AI
Previously at: HKU (NL), ArtEZ University of the Arts (NL), Piet Zwart Institute (NL), iii: Instrument Inventors Initiative (NL)

Generative AI & Creative Coding for Artists

  • Hands-on workshop building generative artworks using AI and code
  • Text-to-image, text-to-video, text-to-audio, and image-to-image generation
  • Prompt engineering as a creative practice
  • Fine-tuning models on custom datasets and algorithmic art with Processing
  • How generative tools challenge traditional notions of artistic intent
  • Cultural implications of models trained on scraped data
  • Governance questions around who controls these systems and who profits from them
WORKSHOP CREATIVE TECH AI
Previously at: HKU (NL), iii: Instrument Inventors Initiative (NL)

Introduction to Computer-Vision Surveillance for Artists

  • How surveillance cameras see: facial recognition, object detection, gait analysis, emotion recognition
  • How these technologies are deployed in public spaces
  • Racial and gender biases embedded in training datasets
  • Governance frameworks (or lack thereof) that regulate their use
  • How artists and activists are subverting surveillance through adversarial fashion, CV dazzle, and counter-forensics
WORKSHOP SURVEILLANCE GOVERNANCE
Previously at: HKU (NL)

Deepfakes

Deepfakes: Technology, Culture & Ethics

  • How deepfakes work under the hood: GANs, diffusion models, encoder-decoder architectures
  • Face-swap technology, voice cloning, and AI-generated video
  • Cultural impact on identity, trust, and media literacy
  • The governance vacuum around non-consensual synthetic media
  • Emerging detection methods and their limitations
  • Live deepfake demonstration where participants see their own face transformed in real time
TALK WORKSHOP ETHICS AI
Previously at: IMPAKT Festival (NL), Peckham Digital (UK), University of Arts London (UK)

How to Build Your Digital Clone

  • Participants create their own digital clone combining face-swap, voice cloning, and AI-generated text
  • The technical pipeline behind digital doubles
  • Cultural shift toward synthetic personas in media and marketing
  • Ethics of consent and likeness rights
  • Governance questions around digital identity ownership
  • Participants leave with their own working clone prototype

Necromemetics: Can Memes Dilute History?

  • How the dead become memes: from Charlie Kirk to Harambe to MLK
  • The lifecycle of posthumous memeification: stripped of context, flattened into punchlines
  • How generative AI accelerates this process with fake quotes, deepfake videos, and AI-generated "interviews"
  • What happens to collective memory when history becomes remix material
  • Cultural mechanics of meme propagation
  • Ethics of using the dead as content and the governance vacuum around posthumous digital likeness

Algorithmic Violence & Predictive Policing

  • How automated decision-making systems produce and reproduce structural violence
  • Predictive policing algorithms that reinforce racial profiling
  • Risk assessment tools in criminal justice, welfare, and immigration
  • Data pipelines, feedback loops, and institutional incentives that make algorithmic harm systemic
  • Drawing on my work with Future Wake (Mozilla Creative Media Award 2021)
  • EU AI Act governance, accountability gaps, and what meaningful oversight could look like
