Can Serrat is a long-running international residency in a former winery in El Bruc, at the foot of the Montserrat massif about an hour from Barcelona. Its 2027 visual art open call is aimed at visual and multidisciplinary artists of all career levels and nationalities, with the residency window running 2 August to 12 December 2027. THE FUNDED PLACES: one full grant with honoraries, comprising a EUR 2,000 honorarium (subject to public funding) and a private room at Can Serrat for six consecutive weeks from 2 August 2027; and one full grant with shared accommodation for one month in October 2027. Both full grants include two weekly communal dinners and basic food supplies (coffee, tea, condiments, select dry goods). ALL RESIDENTS additionally get studio and workspace access, shared facilities, monthly public presentations, an unlimited public transport pass, publication of the project in Can Serrat's digital archive and visibility through its channels. POST-RESIDENCY: a EUR 3,000 visual arts production grant and return grants (one-month return stays) are available to 2027 residents in December 2027. NOTE ON THE REST OF THE CALL: the same application also allocates around 20 partial grants, where residents pay EUR 1,130 per month for a shared room or EUR 1,745 per month for a private room (both with the dinners and basics included), or EUR 305 per month for studio-only without accommodation; only the two full grants are fully funded. The American Academy in Berlin is an independent, nonprofit institute for advanced study in the arts, humanities, social sciences, law, journalism and public policy, whose primary mission is to strengthen the cultural and intellectual ties between the United States and Germany. Each year, after a rigorous selection process, the Academy awards roughly two dozen semester-long Berlin Prize fellowships to individuals who demonstrate excellence in their fields. DISCIPLINES: applications are welcome across the humanities, social sciences, law, journalism and various areas of public policy. The Academy generally encourages projects addressing pressing issues of the day, specifically naming democracy, security, technology and society (especially AI), energy including climate, and global order. Dedicated fellowships also support projects in Jewish studies, German studies, and public health and biotechnology. Project proposals need not focus on Germany, but candidates should explain how a residency in Berlin would enhance their work. NOT ACCEPTED: proposals in mathematics or the natural sciences. NOTE FOR ARTISTS: visual artists and composers are invited through separate, nomination-based competitions, so there is no open application route for them here. ELIGIBILITY: fellowships are restricted to citizens and permanent residents of the United States. Both emerging and established figures are eligible. PhD holders qualify as emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work beyond the dissertation; candidates in non-academic fields such as journalism, filmmaking and policy need a significant record of publication or production; fiction and nonfiction writers must have published at least one book with a reputable press. WHAT FELLOWS DO: fellows present their work to audiences in and around Berlin through lectures, readings, public discussions, performances and film screenings, and should be willing to engage with relevant German institutions, organizations and the media; these activities are integral to the Academy's mission of fostering transatlantic dialogue. APPLICATION MATERIALS: a project proposal of 1,500 to 1,750 words plus a one-page bibliography; a curriculum vitae of up to 10 pages; two writing samples totalling no more than 60 pages; and three letters of recommendation, which are due 2 October 2026. Open to early-career researchers of any discipline (data science, social science, computer science, humanities) who are currently working on a PhD or within 5 years of their PhD end date. Medialab Matadero in Madrid selects three projects for a research and creation residency bringing together contemporary art, design, science, technology and society, welcoming critical, experimental and collaborative work. Each project must connect clearly with one or more themes from Medialab's recent programs: LAB 1 Sentient Media, LAB 2 The Metabolic Sublime, LAB 3 Synthetic Minds, LAB 4 Weird Futures and LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth. Open to individuals and collectives from any discipline (design, art, architecture, film, journalism, digital media, environmental science, philosophy, engineering, programming, activism and more). Resynthesising the Traditional is CTM Festival's long-term initiative co-curated by Stas Sharifulla, taking resynthesis (the computer-music method of analysing a sound to extract its components) as a metaphor for critically engaging with tradition and heritage, against conservative views of culture as frozen and untouchable. The artistic lab at its heart is an open toolbox for artists connecting to the traditional outside exoticisation, cultural essentialism and uneven power dynamics. THEME, AT THE EXTREME: this edition invites artists and practice-based researchers whose work examines the ethical, aesthetic and political implications of traditions entangled with extremity: intensity, transgression, transformation, marginality, outsiderness, endurance, conflict and excess. The call explicitly looks past the usual noise, violence and loud-popular-music tropes and past masculine codings of the extreme, toward current queer and feminist reframings, treating extremity as a relational condition, chosen or imposed, produced between majoritarian centres and their minoritarian outsides. Guiding questions include what it means to follow a tradition to its extreme consequences, who is allowed to push tradition to its limits and whose practices get framed as inauthentic or dangerous, what it means to practise tradition under war, displacement, repression or ecological crisis, and how traditions might offer ways of inhabiting extreme times. Preference goes to work engaging technological, bodily, aesthetic and theoretical forms at that intersection, especially in unexpected or rarely recognised ways. WHAT HAPPENS: theory and practice workshops from the co-hosts with individual and group exercises, closed 15 to 20 minute oral presentations by each participant, a solo public performance or presentation (15 to 20 minutes) at a free-entry event, inputs from specialists such as artists, researchers and technologists, guided individual and group sonic improvisations, field trips and site visits, and feedback sessions with the co-hosts and curators. AFTERWARDS: participants may propose new artistic work or research, solo or in collaborations formed at the lab, to the artistic team; selected works are shortlisted, and up to two are commissioned and presented at CTM in January/February 2028. ELIGIBILITY: an existing practice tied to (re)connecting with traditional ideas and sounds through a contemporary lens and how that overlaps with the extreme, plus clear ideas or questions about the next step you want to take. Approaches may be technological, instrument-focused, compositional, aesthetic, research-oriented or otherwise. Working knowledge of English is recommended, and any concerns about that can be flagged in the form. Up to six participants are selected by co-hosts Karina Utomo (extreme metal vocalist, composer and collaborative artist) and Luigi Monteanni (sound researcher and ethnomusicologist completing a PhD at SOAS on extreme metal in Bandung). The lab is a time-intensive full-day commitment and participants must agree to give the short public performance. A fully funded art-science residency from Ars Electronica and Ceske Budejovice, European Capital of Culture 2028, exploring how art and science can collaborate on urgent environmental challenges: climate emergence, sustainable agriculture, geoengineering, permaculture, water resource management, and the broader ecological impacts on local communities. Selected residents work in direct collaboration with local scientists in Ceske Budejovice. WHO CAN APPLY: artists, designers, creatives and artist collectives with more than 5 years of professional creative practice and documented interdisciplinary work; experience in community engagement and science collaborations is essential; applicants must be 18+, of any nationality, and legally eligible to work and travel in the EU. WHAT YOU GET: a EUR 24,000 package (EUR 6,000 artist fee, up to EUR 15,000 production, up to EUR 3,000 travel and subsistence) plus one month of housing covered separately; two winners are selected. PACT Zollverein, the choreographic centre and arts venue on the Zollverein World Heritage site in Essen, hosts residencies for artists and cultural professionals working in performing arts, inter- and transdisciplinary artistic practices, film and moving image, artistic practice engaging with digital technologies, and socially engaged arts. Residencies are working periods without presentation obligation. WHAT YOU GET: a weekly grant allowance of EUR 400 per project participant (up to 4 people), studio space from 69 to 173 sqm (one studio barrier-free), local accommodation for up to 4 people (barrier-free and family-friendly options by arrangement), travel costs for one journey per participant to and from PACT (low-emission transport preferred), and technical equipment and professional support by arrangement. Graner, Barcelona's centre for dance and live arts creation within the city council's Creative Factories Network, managed by Mercat de les Flors with the Catalan dance professionals' associations APDC and ACPDC, opens its 2027 call for residency grants supporting creation and research projects taking place between January and December 2027. La Résidence of the Festival de Cannes (part of Cinéma de Demain, formerly La Cinéfondation) invites 12 directors each year to write their screenplay in Paris. The programme provides a place of residence in the heart of Paris, a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts, and a collective programme of forums with film industry professionals. The 12 directors from the two annual sessions present their projects at the CNC pavilion in Cannes, giving 10-minute presentations to an audience of professionals and a jury of three film industry personalities; the CNC then awards a EUR 5,000 grant to one director from each session, based on the project that most inspires the jury. The Cinef & Résidence offices serve as a hub where directors meet and schedule private meetings with potential producers. ELIGIBILITY: open to young filmmakers who have made one or several short films and no more than one feature film; candidates must NOT be residents or citizens of France. Selected filmmakers must stay at the Résidence in Paris for the full session. Cultural Horizons strengthens the cultural sector in Ukraine by promoting joint EU-Ukrainian cultural initiatives and expanding access for Ukrainians affected by the war to European cultural and artistic networks. The Residencies strand provides subgrants for EU-based institutions to implement (a) residency placements and/or (b) education projects organised on the basis of residencies, for and with Ukrainian artistic and cultural professionals in 2027. WHO CAN APPLY: artistic and cultural organisations and initiatives registered within the EU; consortia designate one lead organisation to submit and manage funding. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to host Ukrainian artistic and cultural professionals in 2027 and complete projects between January and August 2027, confirm the absence of ties with the Russian Federation (no working partnerships with Russia or Russian organisations, no visits to Russian-occupied territories after 2014), commit to refraining from glorification of Russian imperialism, comply with the EU sanctions regime, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. NGOs and public sector institutions working with displaced and vulnerable groups are prioritised. Ses12naus, a non-profit founded in 2016 to strengthen the cultural and artistic fabric of Ibiza and develop the island as an international reference for contemporary artistic creation, is launching a two-phase residency for visual artists and curators at any career stage. Four projects are selected for the 2026-2027 edition: two by artists or curators based in the Balearic Islands, one from the rest of Spain and one from another European country. STRUCTURE: Phase 1 (21 November to 13 December 2026) is dedicated to research and exploration of the territory and an in-depth understanding of the local context, with a required public activity linked to the process; between phases the Foundation's team actively follows up on the conceptualisation and formalisation of the proposal; in Phase 2 (17 May to 7 June 2027) residents return to produce and present: artists produce their works, curators continue their research, and both present results. The format supports developing a new project or giving continuity to an ongoing one, in dialogue with Ibiza and its communities. The Camargo Foundation invites artists, scholars and thinkers to its flagship Core Fellowship: a ten-week self-directed residency on its clifftop campus overlooking the Mediterranean in Cassis, France, dedicated to research, experimentation and interdisciplinary exchange. Curators apply under the Thinkers category, which covers accomplished professionals and practitioners in cultural and creative fields who are professionally engaged in critical thought, including curators, critics and journalists; projects should engage theoretical, artistic or societal questions. WHAT YOU GET: a stipend of EUR 350 per week (EUR 3,500 total), basic transportation funding, and a furnished apartment with an equipped kitchen on campus. Fourteen fellowships are awarded per year: seven for artists and seven for scholars and thinkers. RESIDENCY PERIODS: Fall 2027 (8 September to 17 November 2027) or Spring 2028 (23 February to 4 May 2028). ELIGIBILITY: artists in visual arts, performance, writing, film, music or multidisciplinary work with at least 5 years of professional practice; scholars holding or pursuing a PhD focused on French and Francophone cultures or cross-cultural Mediterranean studies; and thinkers as described above. The SÍM Residency in Reykjavík announces its January to February 2027 funded residency for four artists from the Nordic-Baltic region. The two-month program invites multidisciplinary artists interested in artistic research and production addressing sustainability, ecology, social equality and Nordic cultural narratives; artists from visual arts, performance, sound, digital media and research are encouraged to apply. Participants develop individual projects while engaging in studio visits with a curator, discussions, public open studios and talks, closing with an exhibition or public presentation at Seljavegur 32. WHAT YOU GET: EUR 2,000 stipend, EUR 600 travel, EUR 500 materials, accommodation with a private bedroom, a private studio, orientation, presentation on the SÍM website and social media, and connections to local workshops (sound recording, Fab Lab, ceramics, textile, darkroom). Funded by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture; artists are encouraged to seek top-up funding from their home arts councils if needed. Candidates must commit to the full 3 January to 28 February 2027 period, communicate in English, attend all meetings and events, participate in the final exhibition, and have their project documented on the SÍM website. APPLICATION: a 400-word project proposal toward the theme, stating specific interests, why the residency matters for the applicant's career now, openness to collaboration, and environmentally responsible methods and material choices. In partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch), Delfina Foundation welcomes applications from contemporary visual artists from Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe for a London residency from 28 June to 17 September 2027, during Delfina's open summer season dedicated to independent research. ELIGIBILITY: applicants must be born in one of the six eligible countries (individuals currently based in the UK are not eligible); be seeking to develop their practice through research; be able to explain how an international residency may benefit their career development and local networks; and be proficient in English (the interview is conducted in English). Collectives and duos are advised to put forth one member to be in residence. With Braunschweig Projects, HBK Braunschweig (one of Germany's largest art academies, with fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication, art history and media studies) offers 7 artistic fellowships on behalf of the State of Lower Saxony for 2027/28: 5 in fine arts and 2 in sound art. The programme promotes young artists and internationalisation, and is aimed at artists who want to work on a project in the immediate vicinity of HBK; proposals should make a significant contribution to the further development of forms of artistic practice. Each fellow is assigned a self-chosen mentor from the fine arts professors, all professors of the fine arts department are available for artistic discourse, and fellows can present their project's progress within the university. Fellows are expected to participate in the Welcome Weeks (19 to 30 April 2027) and a joint final presentation in January/February 2028, and must reside at HBK for at least 8 months during the summer and winter semester lecture periods. Cas-co and Kunsthal Mechelen invite Belgium-based emerging curators, writers, critics, researchers, art historians and research-based practitioners to apply for the Ernest Albert Invitational 2027, a four-month Reflective Residency at Cas-co in Leuven within the Off the Grid programme. The Reflective Resident joins the four artists of Cas-co's Artistic Development Residency from 14 January to 14 May 2027, developing an independent research trajectory while closely following the questions, processes and conversations emerging within the group. Reflection is understood as an active practice: creating connections, introducing perspectives, asking questions and generating new contexts around artistic work. Welcome to my Homepage is an international online residency hosted by The Museum of Human Achievement in Austin, Texas, offering artists a low-stakes opportunity to experiment, explore the web as a site for creative production, and reach new audiences with net art (artwork created on and experienced exclusively through the internet). Founded in 2014, it has hosted over 150 artists. THIS ROUND (Oulu Edition) is open only to applicants in the Oulu, Finland area, as a collaboration between the UNESCO Cities of Media Arts Oulu and Austin, and especially seeks proposals that consider digital culture from a northern perspective, bring an Arctic point of view, or take inspiration from the edges rather than the center. Selected residents (3 per cycle) receive a EUR 500 stipend, the mmm.page drag-and-drop web builder (no coding needed; hosting on your own domain is also fine), virtual studio visits, mentor conversations and promotion. WHO IT IS FOR: all types of creative folks, no coding necessary and no need to be a net or digital artist (past residents include performers, poets, puppeteers, filmmakers, healthcare workers and musicians); the programme especially welcomes people who have not had an opportunity like this before, would benefit from a flexible online residency, or want time to experiment. The Creative Industries Fund NL (Stimuleringsfonds) runs this residency with Videotage, a Hong Kong-based non-profit media arts institution specialising in the promotion, presentation, creation and preservation of moving image and media art in all forms and languages. The Fund is recruiting one Netherlands-based designer, maker or observer working in digital culture to spend two or three months at Videotage's studio space in Hong Kong in 2027, conducting research, broadening their network, developing new work inspired by Hong Kong, and presenting their findings or completed works. The Creative Industries Fund NL (Stimuleringsfonds) is recruiting one Netherlands-based designer, architect or spatial practitioner for a two-month residency in 2027 at Jatiwangi art Factory (JaF), an internationally recognised artistic collective based in a former roof tile factory in West Java, Indonesia. Jatiwangi's history is closely bound up with the colonial history of Indonesia: the Dutch government built large roof tile factories in the region in the early twentieth century, turning it into the most important centre of roof tile production in Southeast Asia. Now that this industry has largely disappeared, JaF develops new visions for the changing rural area with clay and community empowerment at their heart. The residency is part of Tahun Tanah, a recurring programme on the relationship between the people of Jatiwangi and the region's history of clay and terracotta civilisation; the 2027 theme is Elmu Ning Tanah (Learning from the Earth). As resident you explore with the local community what tanah (earth) means in this area, not only as a material for the terracotta industry but also as a carrier of history, memory and culture, and you help shape a future for the terracotta industry rooted in local knowledge, traditions and the needs of the community. The residency is inspired by the Surinamese notion of alakondre (literally 'all countries'), which symbolises living together in cultural diversity and emphasises the power of coexisting differences. Rather than simply promoting harmony, alakondre acknowledges historical inequalities, cultural sensitivities and tensions ensuing from colonial and socio-economic realities, which demands openness and critical awareness of your position as a creative practitioner; personal stories, whether family history or questions of identity, can provide powerful entry points. A network of local partners supports the residency, and at each location a local maker selected by Surinamese partner organisations works alongside you, creating natural opportunities for creative exchange and dialogue. Founded in 2016, Think Tanger unites artists, designers, researchers, entrepreneurs and local communities to explore the urban and cultural dynamics of a city in transformation and to promote understanding and dialogue, working through alternative education, creative entrepreneurship, art production and participatory research. The 7th call of the Art Explora residency programme at the Cité internationale des arts opened 21 September 2026. The programme supports projects exploring the crossovers of art with science, technology and ecology, which makes it one of the stronger art-science fits in Europe. Residents receive a furnished live-work studio of around 50 m2 in Paris, EUR 1,000 per month living stipend, up to EUR 3,000 production budget, round-trip travel and mentoring, with residencies of 3 or 6 months for solo artists and 3 months for duos of an artist with a researcher, curator or writer. Open to visual, performing and digital artists of all nationalities and ages with at least 5 years of professional experience and an international exhibition record. The European Festivals Fund for Emerging Artists (EFFEA), an initiative of the European Festivals Association co-funded by the European Union, opens its fifth call: 50 residencies for 50 emerging artists (individuals, groups or collectives) hosted by partnerships of around 150 festivals, each led by one leading festival with a minimum of two partner festivals from different eligible countries. TWO CATEGORIES: EFFEA Discovery, 40 grants of EUR 8,000 for artists at the early stages of their careers with strong potential to break through internationally; and EFFEA Springboard, 10 grants of EUR 15,000 for artists already established in their own country and ready to develop their careers internationally. A Discovery residency includes a work-in-progress presentation at the leading festival, a workshop with programmers from each partner festival, a short film about the residency, and participation in the EFFEA Intake and Outtake Seminars; a Springboard residency includes at least three presentations of the production result (leading festival plus each partner festival) and a live masterclass by the artist in at least three countries. DISCIPLINES: architecture, ballet, contemporary dance, circus, design and applied arts, digital arts, film, folklore and folk arts, heritage, interdisciplinary, literature, music, opera, street art, theatre, photography and video, puppetry, sculpture, painting. The European Media Art Platform (EMAP/EMARE) is a network of leading European media-art organisations offering fully funded two-month production residencies for artists working with digital media, including media art, bio art and robotic art. Each residency provides a EUR 4,000 grant to the applying artist (including subsistence), a EUR 4,000 project budget, host-provided accommodation, travel covered according to EU ceilings, and access to technical facilities and media labs; a collaborating artist receives an additional EUR 2,000 (EUR 6,000 total for a duo). Residencies take place at one of 15 host institutions across Austria, France, Slovakia, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Germany and Poland. ELIGIBILITY: applicants must be EU residents or taxpayers in an EU member state, or residents/taxpayers of one of the eligible non-EU countries (Netherlands-based artists qualify). The Basel House of Film, run by the Verein Filmhaus Basel und Umgebung, offers a three month residency for emerging artists working in film and television. Residents receive housing at the Filmhaus in the Basel old town plus a stipend to cover travel and living costs. There is no obligation to produce work, and residents can use the open schedule to write a script, prepare a film, draw storyboards, or edit. The facility includes a clubhouse, meeting room, office space, a small cinema with VR equipment, and an editing and grading suite. The program targets up and coming filmmakers, and both national and international applicants are welcome. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through the online form, followed by a CV, motivation letter, and portfolio sent to the residency email.
