Two research and creation residency grants in Agullana, Catalonia, for artists, thinkers and scientists of any branch (formal, natural, social, applied) working at the intersection of art, culture, science and thought. THIS YEAR'S THEME, The Word, is squarely about large language models. The framework moves from the word as creative principle across traditions (the Judeo-Christian creating God, the Quran as uncreated word, the Sanskrit Om and the Vedas, mantras that summon rather than describe) to science relocating that intuition in the cell (Sagan's four-letter alphabet of DNA as a material text, Margulis countering that the language of life is chemistry, Witzany holding that all cell interactions are sign-mediated), and then to LLMs, which for the first time detach the word from the flesh and generate text through a probabilistic architecture trained on human language. The call asks what LLMs reveal about authorship, originality and meaning when a system generates text that moves, persuades or deceives without experience or intention, and whether we can still say the models operate exclusively on human experience once they ingest their own output. It explicitly wants work that blurs comprehension and simulation, authorship and recombination, and it names antecedents worth knowing before applying: Ramon Llull's Ars Magna, Joan Brossa's Sextina cibernetica, Oulipo constraint writing, oracles and divination, oral-formulaic transmission, translation as probabilistic approximation, exquisite corpses, Burroughs's cut-ups, automatic writing, musical improvisation and scientific simulation. Les antipodes asks for engagement 'beyond the instrumental use of the tools' and away from utopian and dystopian framings. WHAT YOU GET: spacious, luminous, independent work spaces plus a shared terrace in the centre of the village, spaces for meeting, dialogue and public presentation, introductions to local, academic, artistic and professional contacts on request, and support organising any activities that arise. The residency ends with an informal presentation, and results may feed into the publications or public programme of Les antipodes. IMPORTANTLY, this is not an acquisition prize and involves no transfer of rights: authorship and intellectual property stay with the creators, and selection implies no acquisition of the work. Credits on resulting work must acknowledge Numeric 2026 and its collaborators. WHO CAN APPLY: open to everyone of legal age, any discipline or origin, individually or as a collective, with the stipend shared among collective members. Applications must be in Catalan or English whatever the working language of the project, submitted through the online form with an optional PDF of up to 5 pages and 10 MB. One application per person or collective. EVALUATION, in order of weight: singularity and innovation; relevance to this year's LLM framework; and interaction and transfer of value, meaning relations with the social and geographical environment of Agullana and the Emporda and a plan for presenting the outcome in editorial, on-site, performative, sound, audiovisual or other form. The call may be declared void if no proposal reaches the required level. PRACTICAL: residents must hold their own health cover (EHIC for EU citizens, or valid travel or health insurance for Spain otherwise) and are responsible for their own equipment. Supported by the Generalitat de Catalunya, Agullana and Figueres town councils, and Accion Cultural Espanola through the PICE national residencies programme. Terms are published in Arabic, Catalan, English, Spanish, French and Chinese.
Stichting Stokroos funds a three-month reflective residency at Fundaziun Nairs in Scuol, Switzerland, for one selected visual artist, designer or craft practitioner (overlap possible). Both emerging and established makers may apply. Stokroos covers full accommodation and meals directly with Fundaziun Nairs and provides a discretionary EUR 7,000 budget for living, travel and production. The application should include a proposal that engages specifically with the residency, its Alpine surroundings and/or its historical and cultural context. Eligibility: you completed your first subject-specific (vocational or higher) programme in 2022 or earlier, or have an equivalent established practice, or started without formal training (first presentation marks the start of your practice); at least 21 years old; living and working in the Kingdom of the Netherlands (including its Caribbean parts) or Suriname for at least one year; not currently enrolled in a study or post-academic programme. Applications are individual only; duos and collectives cannot apply. Makers already selected by Fundaziun Nairs may still apply if they meet the criteria. You may submit only one application per year across all Stokroos grants, and must not have received a Seed Grant rejection in the previous calendar year. Cittadellarte is recruiting a Visiting Research Curator to shape the research arc of the UNIDEE Residency Modules for 2027-2028, the role most recently held by Nina Fiocco and Gaia Martino. Founded by Michelangelo Pistoletto in 1999, the residency has hosted thousands of artists and cultural professionals from 52 countries. WHAT THEY WANT: rather than a fixed theme set in advance, they want a curator who brings their own line of inquiry and develops it collectively through the modules. Suggested thematic areas are the evolving landscape of socially engaged art practices, research-driven and process-oriented practice, and the conditions of cultural work and cultural workers, aligned with UNIDEE's focus on artistic research in response to ecological, geopolitical and technological challenges. They also flag a specific interest in how contemporary art practices are archived, drawing on the UNIDEE archive, which documents over two decades of socially engaged art initiatives. THIS IS A JOB, NOT A GRANT: the duties list is long and operational. It covers proposing the overarching curatorial theme, designing and delivering a minimum of 8 weekly residential modules per year, writing the curatorial statement and resident open call, recruiting mentors and guests, selecting residents, hosting and facilitating every module in person, communications and website texts, a dissemination strategy, and conceiving and editing publications. There is also teaching-adjacent work with the Unidee Academy of Contemporary Arts, including public lectures and studio visits. Budget the time before applying. PROFILE: experience curating art in the public sphere and socially engaged art, specialised knowledge of international contemporary art, experience designing experimental and collaborative educational activities, and experience with artistic research and dissemination standards. Excellent English required; Italian welcome but not essential. MoTA (Museum of Transitory Art) in Ljubljana runs an annual open call for production residencies for media, sound and visual artists, curators and researchers. Production residencies offer full support including accommodation, technical support, production costs and an artist fee; the exact artist-fee amount is not published on the official or aggregator pages, so applicants should confirm the figure directly by email. Residencies run up to one month. Open internationally: artists of all nationalities and at all professional levels are encouraged to apply, as individuals or collectives. No application fee. The residencies at Q-O2 offer time and space for artistic research, reflection and creation in the field of experimental music and sound art. In 2027, Q-O2 will host 20 residencies, 10 for international artists and 10 for local artists living in Belgium, working with, on or around sound. The programme is open to artists, art workers and theorists who wish to pursue a research-oriented project; note that Q-O2 does not organise production-directed residencies and is not a rehearsal space. Duos are possible, and exceptionally small groups too. SUPPORT: a work studio and materials, a creative and communicative environment, and the possibility to present work to a public and/or propose a workshop; for international residents, accommodation in a shared apartment and a contribution to travel expenses of up to EUR 200; and a small subsistence budget reserved for artists who do not come with other funding. There is no artist fee. A final public presentation can be arranged if the artist wishes but is not expected; what Q-O2 requires are some traces of the residency in word, image and/or audio form. The Embassy of Foreign Artists, in partnership with the Centre for Digital Humanities and Multilateralism at the Geneva Graduate Institute, invites artists worldwide to a three-month artistic research residency in Geneva during 2027. The programme centres on archival research in the archives of Geneva-based international intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations (UN, Red Cross and others): uncovering untold stories, examining international decision-making, reflecting on multilateral successes and failures, and imagining new possibilities for international cooperation. Selected artists receive a CHF 1,400 monthly residency grant, accommodation in a private room with shared common areas, artistic guidance from EOFA, connections with archive personnel, and access to participating archives as primary research resource; travel and production costs are the artist's own. ELIGIBILITY: professional artistic practice with a demonstrable body of work (creations, publications and/or performances), over 28 years old, fluent in French or English, not enrolled in basic art training; individuals, duos or groups may apply (same stipend). The American Academy in Berlin is an independent, nonprofit institute for advanced study in the arts, humanities, social sciences, law, journalism and public policy, whose primary mission is to strengthen the cultural and intellectual ties between the United States and Germany. Each year, after a rigorous selection process, the Academy awards roughly two dozen semester-long Berlin Prize fellowships to individuals who demonstrate excellence in their fields. DISCIPLINES: applications are welcome across the humanities, social sciences, law, journalism and various areas of public policy. The Academy generally encourages projects addressing pressing issues of the day, specifically naming democracy, security, technology and society (especially AI), energy including climate, and global order. Dedicated fellowships also support projects in Jewish studies, German studies, and public health and biotechnology. Project proposals need not focus on Germany, but candidates should explain how a residency in Berlin would enhance their work. NOT ACCEPTED: proposals in mathematics or the natural sciences. NOTE FOR ARTISTS: visual artists and composers are invited through separate, nomination-based competitions, so there is no open application route for them here. ELIGIBILITY: fellowships are restricted to citizens and permanent residents of the United States. Both emerging and established figures are eligible. PhD holders qualify as emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work beyond the dissertation; candidates in non-academic fields such as journalism, filmmaking and policy need a significant record of publication or production; fiction and nonfiction writers must have published at least one book with a reputable press. WHAT FELLOWS DO: fellows present their work to audiences in and around Berlin through lectures, readings, public discussions, performances and film screenings, and should be willing to engage with relevant German institutions, organizations and the media; these activities are integral to the Academy's mission of fostering transatlantic dialogue. APPLICATION MATERIALS: a project proposal of 1,500 to 1,750 words plus a one-page bibliography; a curriculum vitae of up to 10 pages; two writing samples totalling no more than 60 pages; and three letters of recommendation, which are due 2 October 2026. Open to early-career researchers of any discipline (data science, social science, computer science, humanities) who are currently working on a PhD or within 5 years of their PhD end date. You must have, or be able to secure, an affiliation with a Dutch university or research institute willing to second you; external PhD students may use the funding to obtain such a contract. Your project must make use of one or more of the KB digital collections and you must be able to work with primarily Dutch data. You must be available at 0.5 FTE over 6 months and able to spend two days a week on-site at the KB in The Hague. COLLECTIONS: over 130 million digitized pages of newspapers, magazines, radio bulletins and books from 1470 onward (via Delpher and DBNL), a born-digital web collection of more than 23,000 websites, ground-truth and derived datasets on the KB Lab, and metadata including Linked Data. Medialab Matadero in Madrid selects three projects for a research and creation residency bringing together contemporary art, design, science, technology and society, welcoming critical, experimental and collaborative work. Each project must connect clearly with one or more themes from Medialab's recent programs: LAB 1 Sentient Media, LAB 2 The Metabolic Sublime, LAB 3 Synthetic Minds, LAB 4 Weird Futures and LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth. Open to individuals and collectives from any discipline (design, art, architecture, film, journalism, digital media, environmental science, philosophy, engineering, programming, activism and more). Resynthesising the Traditional is CTM Festival's long-term initiative co-curated by Stas Sharifulla, taking resynthesis (the computer-music method of analysing a sound to extract its components) as a metaphor for critically engaging with tradition and heritage, against conservative views of culture as frozen and untouchable. The artistic lab at its heart is an open toolbox for artists connecting to the traditional outside exoticisation, cultural essentialism and uneven power dynamics. THEME, AT THE EXTREME: this edition invites artists and practice-based researchers whose work examines the ethical, aesthetic and political implications of traditions entangled with extremity: intensity, transgression, transformation, marginality, outsiderness, endurance, conflict and excess. The call explicitly looks past the usual noise, violence and loud-popular-music tropes and past masculine codings of the extreme, toward current queer and feminist reframings, treating extremity as a relational condition, chosen or imposed, produced between majoritarian centres and their minoritarian outsides. Guiding questions include what it means to follow a tradition to its extreme consequences, who is allowed to push tradition to its limits and whose practices get framed as inauthentic or dangerous, what it means to practise tradition under war, displacement, repression or ecological crisis, and how traditions might offer ways of inhabiting extreme times. Preference goes to work engaging technological, bodily, aesthetic and theoretical forms at that intersection, especially in unexpected or rarely recognised ways. WHAT HAPPENS: theory and practice workshops from the co-hosts with individual and group exercises, closed 15 to 20 minute oral presentations by each participant, a solo public performance or presentation (15 to 20 minutes) at a free-entry event, inputs from specialists such as artists, researchers and technologists, guided individual and group sonic improvisations, field trips and site visits, and feedback sessions with the co-hosts and curators. AFTERWARDS: participants may propose new artistic work or research, solo or in collaborations formed at the lab, to the artistic team; selected works are shortlisted, and up to two are commissioned and presented at CTM in January/February 2028. ELIGIBILITY: an existing practice tied to (re)connecting with traditional ideas and sounds through a contemporary lens and how that overlaps with the extreme, plus clear ideas or questions about the next step you want to take. Approaches may be technological, instrument-focused, compositional, aesthetic, research-oriented or otherwise. Working knowledge of English is recommended, and any concerns about that can be flagged in the form. Up to six participants are selected by co-hosts Karina Utomo (extreme metal vocalist, composer and collaborative artist) and Luigi Monteanni (sound researcher and ethnomusicologist completing a PhD at SOAS on extreme metal in Bandung). The lab is a time-intensive full-day commitment and participants must agree to give the short public performance. A fully funded art-science residency from Ars Electronica and Ceske Budejovice, European Capital of Culture 2028, exploring how art and science can collaborate on urgent environmental challenges: climate emergence, sustainable agriculture, geoengineering, permaculture, water resource management, and the broader ecological impacts on local communities. Selected residents work in direct collaboration with local scientists in Ceske Budejovice. WHO CAN APPLY: artists, designers, creatives and artist collectives with more than 5 years of professional creative practice and documented interdisciplinary work; experience in community engagement and science collaborations is essential; applicants must be 18+, of any nationality, and legally eligible to work and travel in the EU. WHAT YOU GET: a EUR 24,000 package (EUR 6,000 artist fee, up to EUR 15,000 production, up to EUR 3,000 travel and subsistence) plus one month of housing covered separately; two winners are selected. La Résidence of the Festival de Cannes (part of Cinéma de Demain, formerly La Cinéfondation) invites 12 directors each year to write their screenplay in Paris. The programme provides a place of residence in the heart of Paris, a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts, and a collective programme of forums with film industry professionals. The 12 directors from the two annual sessions present their projects at the CNC pavilion in Cannes, giving 10-minute presentations to an audience of professionals and a jury of three film industry personalities; the CNC then awards a EUR 5,000 grant to one director from each session, based on the project that most inspires the jury. The Cinef & Résidence offices serve as a hub where directors meet and schedule private meetings with potential producers. ELIGIBILITY: open to young filmmakers who have made one or several short films and no more than one feature film; candidates must NOT be residents or citizens of France. Selected filmmakers must stay at the Résidence in Paris for the full session. SESSIONS: two per year, each lasting four and a half months, the first running 15 March to 31 July and the second 1 October to 15 February. Artistic fields: film, writing, interdisciplinary. The Creative Industries Fund NL (Stimuleringsfonds) runs this residency with Videotage, a Hong Kong-based non-profit media arts institution specialising in the promotion, presentation, creation and preservation of moving image and media art in all forms and languages. The Fund is recruiting one Netherlands-based designer, maker or observer working in digital culture to spend two or three months at Videotage's studio space in Hong Kong in 2027, conducting research, broadening their network, developing new work inspired by Hong Kong, and presenting their findings or completed works. The residency encourages crossovers and experimentation, giving the participant space to explore new methodologies, widen their creative practice and produce work that pushes the boundaries of digital culture, with a focus on social and urban dynamics. The 2027 edition takes the technological 'black box' phenomenon as its starting point and invites the resident to respond to that theme within the context of Videotage. ELIGIBILITY: you are an individual designer, maker or observer within the field of digital culture; you are established in the Netherlands, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, Sint Eustatius or Sint Maarten (Kingdom of the Netherlands); you are registered in the business register of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) or another business register within the Kingdom of the Netherlands; and you have had a professional practice in the creative industry for at least four years. NOT open to duos, collectives or cooperative ventures, nor to designers and makers who receive a grant during the work period under the Talent Development Grant Scheme, the Open Call Self-taught Designer or the Open Call Emerging Design Practices ABCSSS. Note that accepting this open call means you cannot apply to those schemes and open calls in 2027. FUNDING: EUR 5,000 for two months or EUR 6,500 for three months, covering travel, insurance, living expenses, compensation for time invested and material and transport costs; accommodation, studio use and Videotage's facilitation are covered separately by the Fund. The European Media Art Platform (EMAP/EMARE) is a network of leading European media-art organisations offering fully funded two-month production residencies for artists working with digital media, including media art, bio art and robotic art. Each residency provides a EUR 4,000 grant to the applying artist (including subsistence), a EUR 4,000 project budget, host-provided accommodation, travel covered according to EU ceilings, and access to technical facilities and media labs; a collaborating artist receives an additional EUR 2,000 (EUR 6,000 total for a duo). Residencies take place at one of 15 host institutions across Austria, France, Slovakia, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Latvia, Germany and Poland. ELIGIBILITY: applicants must be EU residents or taxpayers in an EU member state, or residents/taxpayers of one of the eligible non-EU countries (Netherlands-based artists qualify). Undergraduate and Master's students are not eligible; PhD candidates and emerging artists of any age and academic background may apply. IMPORTANT: applicants must apply as a duo or collective, or propose a collaborative project, rather than as a purely solo applicant. The Basel House of Film, run by the Verein Filmhaus Basel und Umgebung, offers a three month residency for emerging artists working in film and television. Residents receive housing at the Filmhaus in the Basel old town plus a stipend to cover travel and living costs. There is no obligation to produce work, and residents can use the open schedule to write a script, prepare a film, draw storyboards, or edit. The facility includes a clubhouse, meeting room, office space, a small cinema with VR equipment, and an editing and grading suite. The program targets up and coming filmmakers, and both national and international applicants are welcome. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through the online form, followed by a CV, motivation letter, and portfolio sent to the residency email.
