The Sachsen-Anhalt state art foundation's twice-yearly round: work stipends for free artistic development (EUR 1,500 per month for 3 or 6 months, no output obligation) and project funding for artistic projects including publications, across all disciplines including media art. The Schaufler Lab at TUD Dresden University of Technology, a joint project with The Schaufler Foundation, invites applications for its six-month artist-in-residence at the interface of art and science for 2027. The theme of the Lab's third funding phase (2027 to 2030) is Energy Cultures in Transition: how forms of energy and energy transitions shape and are shaped by cultural practices, value systems, power relations, environmental relationships and imaginaries of the future. Residents work with the researchers of the Schaufler Kolleg graduate college and the wider university, with access to humanities, natural-science and engineering labs, and give lectures, talks and workshops, including a collaboration with the Dresden University of Fine Arts. Past residents include Quadrature, Mario Pfeifer, Rosa Barba and Esmeralda Conde Ruiz. ELIGIBILITY: internationally active artists or artist groups in media art, conceptual art, performance and related fields with completed international projects and exhibitions, an interest in exchange between artistic and scientific research, and proficient German or English; presence on site in Dresden is required by arrangement. AIR-M Ebenböckhaus and the non-profit Salta art, in partnership with ERA Foundation, offer a residency for two contemporary visual artists from South America at the Ebenböckhaus in Munich-Pasing, Germany, from 7 July to 29 September 2027. Since 2022 the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich has collaborated with Salta art to extend the residency programme to South America; ERA Foundation's support funds the second position. WHAT YOU GET: a grant and accommodation contract of EUR 1,300 per month from the City of Munich, rent-free accommodation in a shared apartment with individual lockable rooms, three work and presentation rooms (52 m2) in the house, return tickets from South America (economy / 2nd class), a shared studio at Empfangshalle in the Museumsquartier, a EUR 600 research trip allowance and a MakerPlus membership at MakerSpace Munich (wood, metal, electronics, IoT, laser cutting, additive manufacturing, textile workshops). A mentoring initiative pairs each resident with a Munich-based curator for up to three meetings, a research trip is organised, and an Open Studio event closes the residency. A curator from South America will also live and work at the house for part of the period. IMPRS-IS is an interdisciplinary doctoral programme run by the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems with the Universities of Stuttgart and Tuebingen, covering machine learning, AI, robotics, computer vision and related fields, with funding guaranteed through at least 2030. WHO: applicants with a strong academic background and a master's degree (conferred or expected soon) in engineering, computer science, cognitive science, mathematics, control theory, neuroscience, materials science, physics or related fields; existing doctoral students may apply in their first year. FOTODOKS, the Munich festival for contemporary documentary photography, invites existing lens-based, documentary-driven projects on the theme of care and its connections to politics, emotions and intimate relationships for its 13th edition in October 2027. Selected works are shown in a group exhibition and included in the festival catalogue and on the FOTODOKS website; the curatorial team also invites some artists directly. WHO: individuals, collectives and groups of all backgrounds, ages and genders; submissions in English or German. Themed international residency: three artists, duos or collectives are selected for one of three four-month periods between February 2027 and January 2028 to work on the 2027 theme 'On Absence'. Each resident receives EUR 1,100 per month and a rent-free furnished studio apartment in central Weimar; the programme closes with a group exhibition the following year. The UNESCO City of Media Arts Office of Karlsruhe's Department of Cultural Affairs awards the dm-Award connecting worlds, with dm-drogerie markt as awarding partner, ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe as curatorial partner and KME as organiser of the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival. Under the motto PLAYGROUND, the call seeks projects that connect the digital space of the projection mappings on Karlsruhe Palace's facade with the analogue space of the Market Square, playfully activating public space. FORMAT: every project must have two elements: a projection mapping on the palace facade (2 to 5 minutes) and at least one satellite on the Market Square that also works independently of the projection and is publicly and freely accessible. Examples include interactive projections and game elements with audience participation, installations or media artworks relating to the projection, combinations of performance, concerts or actions with projection mapping, sculptural, 3D or immersive formats, new technologies, and collaborations between local and international players. Open call for a 7-minute projection mapping on the Karlsruhe palace facade, on the 2027 festival theme Playground (The Art of Playing). For artists, designers, studios and collectives working in projection mapping; ZKM provides curatorial and technical coaching. The Kaete Hamburger Centre for Cultural Practices of Reparation (KHK CURE) at Saarland University invites applications for up to twelve fellowships for its fourth year, October 2027 to September 2028. CURE welcomes scholars from cultural studies, the humanities and the social sciences whose work examines questions of reparation and irreparability; artists holding a doctorate and experienced in academic collaboration may also apply. ANNUAL THEME: 'Things', foregrounding the material dimension of reparation: objects, artefacts and material environments through which practices such as repair, mending and reuse acquire cultural and political significance. Proposals must align with at least one of the Centre's three thematic fields (history, experience or nature) and address the annual theme. The Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF) invites applications for two Leibniz Summer Fellowships in German and/or European (including Eastern European) history in the twentieth century. Fellows spend two consecutive months between April and October 2027 in Potsdam or Berlin pursuing independent research while taking part in departmental activities and presenting work in ZZF's research seminar; the institute's five research departments include Contemporary History in the Age of Media and Information Society. make-a-thek, a Horizon Europe project (grant No. 101177660) coordinated by Fab Lab Barcelona at IAAC, connects creative spaces, public libraries and makers across Europe and beyond to share skills in circular fashion, traditional crafts and technology. Its open call runs two tracks. MOBILITY SCHEME (Track A): experienced practitioners (make-a-thek Experts) travel to an EU pilot location (Antwerp, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Helsinki, Kranj, Milan, Opole, Reykjavik, Kyiv or Zaporizhzhia) to deliver a workshop, talk or hands-on training, with a EUR 1,000 stipend to support expenses. KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (Track B): learners, practitioners, makers, craftspeople and librarians travel to a 2-day in-person group meet-up (Cohort 1 in Barcelona between end of November and start of December 2026; Cohort 2 in Berlin in May 2027), then organise a local knowledge-sharing activity, with a EUR 850 stipend. The Mensch Maschine VISIT Residency Program is an annual fellowship offering four fully funded fellowships to artists from around the world, run by the JUNGE AKADEMIE of the Akademie der Künste (Berlin) with VISIT, the artist-in-residence programme of the E.ON Foundation, E-WERK Luckenwalde and Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw). The 2027 edition particularly encourages projects at the intersection of art, energy and ecology exploring the theme ENERGY GHOSTS: the unseen dimensions of energy approached through mythology, cosmology or speculative fiction, the invisible infrastructures, histories and residues that haunt contemporary life, and energy as an ecological, political or spiritual force. Proposals are welcome from visual art, performance, film, installation, sound, writing and new media. WHAT YOU GET: EUR 20,000 per fellow for artist fees and production costs of a new project (research and development, travel, material and presentation costs); three fellows receive studio space and accommodation at E-WERK Luckenwalde (a former power station about 40 minutes south of Berlin), one is accommodated by the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Berlin's Wiederaufnahmefoerderung funds revivals of existing independent-scene productions, covering rehearsals and performances for solo and group projects across all performing art forms: theatre, dance, performance, music theatre and music. WHO: professional artists and independent groups based in Berlin (not enrolled students), and institutions working mainly with the Berlin independent scene. The original production must have been staged successfully in Berlin (music productions may have premiered elsewhere) and must previously have received Berlin Senate funding; work on the revival must not have started, and the same revival cannot already be funded by another Berlin or Hauptstadtkulturfonds programme. Minimum performance targets apply: generally four performances for theatre and dance, two for music and music theatre. EHIN invites artists to explore hybrid intelligence through the shared agency of the more-than-human world: biocomputing, interspecies and multi-species communication, biofabrication, sensing and biohybrid systems, building new artistic narratives rooted in ecological knowledge. Six artists are selected, one per host (Kersnikova Dirty Lab in Ljubljana, ZKM Hertzlab in Karlsruhe, Kontejner in Zagreb, LABoral in Gijon, CPN in Belgrade, GLUON in Brussels with Malda Lab Utrecht), each paired with a biocomputing expert. STRUCTURE (about 12 months): Phase 1, February to September 2027, on-site residency at the first host ending in an Open Dirty Lab public event; Phase 2, October 2027 to January 2028, co-production at a partner lab of the artist's choice, ending in an exhibition-ready artwork; works are then shown locally and in a final group exhibition and symposium at ZKM (Phase 3, to October 2028). FUNDING: a fixed EUR 25,000 grant per artist covering artist fee (max 35%) and production/technical costs, paid 40/40/20; travel and accommodation arranged separately with the host institution(s); the second host may add a conditional co-production budget. The European Media Art Festival (EMAF) in Osnabrueck invites submissions for its 2027 edition in three sections: Film (experimental films of all lengths and any theme), Installation (installative, interactive, spatial or sculptural media art works) and Expanded (performances, live events or workshops). WHAT YOU GET: all films selected for the International Selection are equal winners of the EMAF Award with EUR 400 prize money each; films in the Features section (over 60 minutes) receive a EUR 250 screening fee; curated programmes pay EUR 80-250 depending on length; installations and expanded projects receive a EUR 500 fee with production costs paid by the festival. Selected artists are invited to the festival with free accreditation, three hotel nights (potentially longer if setting up is required) and a contribution to travel costs. RULES: maximum 2 works per artist; only works completed in 2026 or 2027 are eligible; no premiere status required; works entered at previous editions will not be reconsidered. Films up to 60 minutes are viewed for the International Selection, films over 60 minutes for Features. Germany's flagship residency awards for visual artists, architects, writers and composers, administered by the Kulturstiftung der Laender for the federal government. One of the best-known international artist residencies: established artists live and work in Berlin for a year (six months for film) and become part of the city's cultural scene. Applications are open in literature, music and sound, and film; visual arts fellows are nominated by a jury and cannot apply. ELIGIBILITY: established artists with their own voice and standing, no upper age limit; students and recent graduates are not eligible (doctoral students are). German nationals and artists residing primarily in Germany are excluded, with narrow exceptions for German dual nationals abroad and recent arrivals. Alumni cannot reapply. HIIG's Impact AI Fellowship invites people interested in measuring the effects of AI on society and the environment to assess an existing, operational AI application and take lead authorship of a published case report. Applicants do not need their own case; HIIG helps match fellows with cases, and proposed cases must be deployed applications rather than prototypes or research ideas. WHO: holders of a master's degree; field experience is an advantage but an academic track record is not required. FORMAT: ten weeks from 16 August to 22 October 2027, with mandatory in-person weeks in Berlin (16-20 August and 4-8 October 2027), an independent research phase that can be done remotely, regular online check-ins, and a mandatory online preparatory session on 11 May 2027. The 73rd International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (27 April to 2 May 2027), one of the oldest and most influential short film festivals, opens its call for films across five competitions: International (max 35 minutes, produced outside Germany, German festival premiere required), German (max 45 minutes, produced in Germany, no premiere requirement), NRW (max 45 minutes, produced or co-produced in North Rhine-Westphalia), International Children's and Youth Film, and the MuVi Award for music videos produced in Germany (max 15 minutes). ELIGIBILITY: works produced after 1 January 2026; screening formats 35mm, 16mm, Super 8 and DCP (MuVi: DCP). PRIZES: from the EUR 8,000 Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen and EUR 4,000 Principal Prize through German, NRW, children's/youth, FIPRESCI, Ecumenical and audience prizes, awarded to the directors, plus European Film Awards and ECFA nominations. Winter round of Germany's flagship open, non-thematic federal project line, one of the largest European funders that will back a festival, exhibition programme or multi-partner convening run by an organisation rather than an individual artist. It funds large innovative projects across all artistic fields, explicitly including New Media alongside visual and performing arts, music, film, photography and architecture. There is no published maximum, but the EUR 50,000 minimum total project cost sets the scale, and at least 20 percent co-financing is mandatory. This round closes 31 January 2027 at 12:00 CET, with decisions at the external jury meeting in May 2027; no project may start before its jury date, so plan four to six months of lead time. Non-German organisations are genuinely eligible, which is unusual at this scale, provided the project is visible in Germany and has an international dimension. Two practical barriers: the application form must be completed in German, and project communications must include a German-language version.
The Basisfoerderung is Berlin's two-year structural line for the independent performing arts scene, giving groups and solo artists without a production venue planning security beyond single projects. WHO: professional, privately organised groups and individual artists in dance, performing and performative arts (all genres) with their main working base in Berlin, a visible public presence in the Berlin scene and a demonstrated artistic identity; a group should show at least two years of continuous, independent work in the applying line-up. Legal entities and natural persons can apply. CONDITIONS: at least one new production in Berlin per funding year (revivals only in exceptional cases); if performance costs are requested, box-office income must appear in the financing plan. WHAT IT FUNDS: production-related personnel and material costs, Berlin performance costs, general costs for developing and securing working structures, and costs for accessible production. Jury criteria include continuity and development of previous work, a convincing longer-term artistic perspective, quality of the planned productions, own and third-party income, networking and relevance to Berlin's cultural infrastructure. The Konzeptfoerderung is the longest structural funding line Berlin offers independent performing arts groups and individual artists who have no venue of their own: four years of funding for an artistic concept rather than single productions. WHO: professional, privately organised groups and individual artists in dance, performing and performative arts (all genres) whose work has shown a distinct artistic character over several years, has met with interest from audiences and critics, and who have their main working base in Berlin. CONDITIONS: at least one new production in Berlin per funding year; revivals only in exceptional cases. WHAT IT FUNDS: production-related personnel and material costs, performance costs, and general costs needed to develop and secure the artistic work that cannot be assigned to individual productions. The microagi Research Fellowship (Cohort 01) provides researchers with frontier-lab resources and the freedom to work on hard problems in robotics, embodied AI, and the systems around them. Fellows work in residence for six months at microagi's offices in Munich or Zurich. AMOUNT: up to $2,000,000 in compute; $10,000/month stipend. RESEARCH AREAS: (1) Long Horizon Dexterous Manipulation -- end-to-end models for complex multi-stage tasks with dexterous hands, natural language instruction following, memory across long task sequences, fine-grained physical control in unstructured environments; (2) Cross Embodiment Learning; (3) On Device Physical Intelligence; (4) Safe and Reliable Deployment. microagi's model is to deploy embodied intelligence into physical-world operations and turn what it learns there into compounding research.
